Maytenus ilicifolia | This species is found as a small tree or large shrub, with a dense, rounded crown, native of high altitude regions of southern Brazil, with shiny leathery leaves and margins provided with little stiff thorns; Its flowers are small and yellowish in color and its fruits, in the form of oblong capsules, dehiscent in red color, containing 1-2 seeds of black color¹. Espinheira Santa became known in the medical world in 1922 when Professor Aluízio Franca of the Paraná Medical School reported its success in treating ulcers.²
