Soy Isoflavones | Soybean is a legume domesticated by the Chinese about 5,000 years ago. It has been an important crop in Manchuria, Korea and Japan since ancient times, but the cultivation of this legume has spread all over the world due to its remarkable nutritional properties. The plant, herbaceous and annual, has thin branches covered with tiny hairs and reaches about 40 cm in height. The leaves, made up of three leaflets, closely resemble those of beans or peas. It produces small, whitish, lilac or violet flowers. The fruits are pods with four to six round shaped seeds. New investigations have highlighted its high isoflavone content, with the possible beneficial effect of soybean and its derivatives in decreasing the incidence of climacteric and menopausal symptoms.², ³
